Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are soon to graduate and move out on their own--a process made all the more complicated for them because they are recent immigrants. It is crucial that they have basic financial literacy to guide them and the materials for this project will give them the background they need to succeed.

As 12th-graders are about to step out into the world on their own, my students need basic financial literacy to help them realize their own vision of the American Dream.

I am so fortunate to teach in a school that is entirely composed of recently immigrated students from around the world. As a teacher of U.S. government and economics, I hope to empower my students to take part in the U.S. democracy and the economy. My students are teenagers from over 30 countries around the world, and they are all new to America and to the English language. They come from China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tibet, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Ukraine, Mauritania, and many other countries. And the beautiful thing about our school is that all of these students learn to collaborate in class and build their English skills and their content knowledge together. It is a community of caring, respect, and generosity and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.

My Project

My students will use the the educational workbooks, textbooks and simulations to develop the crucial financial literacy they need to survive as high-school graduates on their own. My students are all English language learners and represent a multitude of educational and cultural backgrounds, yet they all work together on project-based assignments to help each other succeed. The materials I have requested here will allow my students to take part in simulations for career-choice, banking, saving, applying for jobs, and searching for housing. The handbooks and worksheets will help me tailor their lessons and meet each student at his or her level of understanding. Through simulated real-world tasks like writing checks, applying for credit cards, and the like, my students will gain vital skills to help them flourish as new members of American society.

My students are on the cusp of graduating high school and starting life on their own.

This is made all the more challenging for them as all of them are recent immigrants who are still very new to the English language. Comprehending the specialized and at times arcane language of money is going to be a struggle for many of them. These materials will boost their financial literacy as they head into life on their own.
