This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Bluest Eye is an amazing book that inspires great thoughts and conversations about beauty, racism, American History... My students need to own books, especially quality books, so that they can annotate and prepare for college- which is just a year away!
My students are inner city kids in Los Angeles-- most of whom don't speak English at home.
Bringing them literature that they can use to prepare for college is not only improving the quality of their high school education, but giving them tools they will need soon!
My Project
Pulitzer Prize Winning book "The Bluest Eye" is a phenomenal look at beauty and what creates the ideal-- which makes for great discussions and great essay writing! Female students and students of color especially love to think about where their ideal beauty came from.
When some of my students were able to get their own copies of the last book we read in class, they were exposed to annotation and performed brilliantly on their final and in class discussions.
This is one great way to bridge the achievement gap!
