Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our basketball program has study hall every day after school and then practices for games. We compete in the NYC PSAL league and have had a lot of success. In the last two seasons, all of our student-athletes have gone to college outside of NYC where they are doing very well, some playing in college.
My students are primarily from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic.
Almost all of them qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students care a lot about getting to college and starting a career that can support their family. They are passionate about basketball and it is a tremendous motivator for them both in school and on the field. Many are high level basketball players who train year around and desperately want to go to college on a scholarship, where they will likely be the first member of their family to graduate with a college degree.
Our school is a small, intimate public school where teachers work very hard to create a warm, caring environment with high expectations for the students and their success.
My Project
Students will use these materials to have their basketball season. With uniforms and warm up uniforms they will be able to play in games. They will also use the new rim to replace the broken one so that we can have home games. We need two more basketballs and a scorebook for games as well. The league fees and tournament entry fees will allow us to play in special events and tournaments that they are so excited for and will give them more exposure for college coaches.
This project will allow us to continue to do the great work in building the basketball program that is vital to the enjoyment, experience and future success of our participating students.
With this project they are able to have a team for this season, and with the uniforms beyond this season into the future.
