Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember rushing home to share your brilliant, imaginative piece of art you made in school with your family? I want my students to have that same feeling of excitement. Studies show a link between art education and improved literacy skills. The students will gain academic confidence through art.
My students are a curious, talkative, intelligent group of third graders (8 and 9 year olds).
They love to read chapter books, write personal narratives and are currently learning their multiplication tables. They are all Hispanic and many of their parents are immigrants from Mexico and Central America. My school is a K-8 public school in a low income neighborhood of Los Angeles. It is a title 1 school and over 90 percent participate in the free lunch program.
My Project
My students will be doing hands on fine art projects in the vein of famous artist such as Gustav Klimt. They will use different mediums (watercolors, oil pastels, metallic foil paper) to create self portraits and collages. Before starting each project, my students will learn about each artist whose technique they will be using during the lesson. Through your donations, they will be able to create art projects that were previously not possible, due to limited art supplies at our school.
Your donation of art supplies will bring out the imaginations of my students and improve their confidence.
This confidence they gain will spill out into other academic areas such as reading and writing. Some students may discover a new love for art they never had before. Other students will continue to grow in their art talent.
