Help for Struggling and Reluctant Readers

My students need audio books that they can listen to while following along in a text, high interest quick read magazines, and motivational incentives, like book marks and wrist bands, to get them started.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Melissa's classroom raised $524

My Students

Do you remember getting a sinking feeling in your stomach when the teacher announced a reading assignment? If you do, maybe you can understand some of the challenges my students face. If you never got that feeling, please help my students become as passionate about reading as you were!

I teach 11th grade in an inner city school that has no entrance requirements.

I have many English Language Learners in my classroom, and all of my native English speakers read below grade level. A recent reading test revealed that the average reading score in my class was 3.5 grade. My students want to learn, but are often frustrated by reading. The materials I have chosen are designed to both get my students intrigued, help them understand the material, and teach them content from our social studies curriculum.

My Project

This kit includes several audio books with one copy of the print book so students who have finished their work can listen and follow along in the classroom, and hopefully be motivated enough to want to check out the materials to take home. Students will get bookmarks that they will chart all their reading progress on, and earn 'extra credit' punches on a special card. I will make "Reader of the Week" certificates with the nice card stock, and the big posters will display achievements for everyone with stickers. If you're not a high school teacher, this sounds silly, but my students love stickers just as much as any 3rd grader! I am looking forward to using Time Magazine articles in my World History classes, and in our 35 minute homeroom classes as discussion pieces. We will use the magazines to learn common vocabulary words as well as content. I selected some books to enhance my own planning, and the Guess Who games can be fitted with different cards to teach all types of vocabulary.

My 11th grade students read on a 3rd grade level, and literacy is the most important thing that any student can take away from school.

Literate people can research answers to their own questions, and write well enough to be taken seriously. I have brought my own books to my classroom to build a small library, but students aren't interested in most of them. We do not have many resources to order current events magazines, and I have no audiobooks available for my students - please help!
