Help First Graders Love Reading!

My students need a new classroom library containing high quality books covering interesting topics.

My Students

Our first grade inclusion class is comprised of 25 six year old students that reside in a small city in New Jersey. Many of our students come from homes where English is not their first language. Many also lack the foundational skills necessary for academic achievement.

Our goal for this upcoming year is to foster these skills to create lifelong learners, particularly, lovers of literacy.

Our classroom is in desperate need of a new class library for our students. The power of motivation is astounding! When students are exposed to texts that are of interest to them they become motivated to read and spend more time on reading. Studies confirm that students can read levels higher than their independent reading level when reading a text that is of interest to them.

We hope we can help manifest in our first grade students a true and lasting appreciation for reading. Please help us accomplish this dream!

My Project

I am requesting a new classroom library. My co-teacher and I would like to expose our students to interesting texts in attempts to motivate them to read more independently and love reading.

Our current classroom library has been loved for many years, but now many books are dated, tattered and torn.

How can we expect students to develop a love for reading when they are given books that are in such shape?

Providing our students with the opportunity to have more of a selection of new, well maintained books allows for students to have the exposure to a variety of interesting topics.
