My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a real book on your own? Wrote a story that your mom hung on the refrigerator? This is an experience that most students will have in first grade and with your help, my students will make similarly monumental and memorable strides in both literacy and math.

For the past two years, I have taught kindergarten at a high-poverty charter school in Washington, DC.

This year I have the opportunity to follow my kindergarten students to the first grade. This class of students is incredibly bright and ended their kindergarten year performing above grade level in all subjects. I hope to continue guiding them on the path to success in this upcoming school year. My two years of teaching young children has taught me that high quality and hands-on materials are essential for student learning. My past Donors Choose proposal for kindergarten materials really accelerated the learning of my students and therefore I am now requesting first grade materials to maintain a high level of student achievement.

My Project

This project request contains a wide variety of materials that will facilitate student success. For literacy instruction, I have requested hands-on phonics centers and materials where students can work independently to enhance their reading and writing abilities. I have also requested lined composition books, sentence strips, and dry erase markers which can be used for an infinite number of instructional purposes! Lastly, I am requesting a set of ten whisper phones, which students use to hear themselves read aloud without confusing the students around them. For math, I have ordered a calendar set that specifically targets the skills that students need in first grade. One especially important part of this set is the money section, which will help students master counting change and deepen their number sense overall.
