Help me give my students that need extra supplies over the long weekend soup, oatmeal packets, popcorn, Welch's Fruit Snacks and other food to fill their backpacks.
Our school has an enrollment of 1500+ students of which 34% are economically disadvantaged. We have a balance of 52% males and 48% females, with our minority population at 52%. We have 75% of our students on free or reduced lunch.
Our school is in a suburban area, built-in 1970 with a strong school spirit and ties to the community.
Our school has an unusual percentage of teachers who graduated from here and returned later to teach. I jokingly warn the new ninth graders about drinking the water! Our school community is a close-knit group that looks out for each other. Thank you for considering my project for funding to help us.
My Project
We have a Pantry that we fill in the Main Office full of food and snacks for our less advantaged students to "shop" from on Fridays before the long weekend. We give them backpacks for privacy, they are supervised in the Pantry and allowed to take items to eat over the weekend. On Mondays, they return with the empty backpacks.
I had never thought about how some students don't look forward to the weekend or the Winter Break because it means they struggle for food.
Thank you for considering my project to fill our Pantry at school for our students.
