My Project
I hope to get students plenty of snacks--such as a variety of granola bars, crackers, and apple sauce--to help keep their tummies full and their brains focused so they can continue to successfully work. Third grade is a rigorous year and our days are jam packed with learning from the moment we arrive until the moment we leave. My students are generally quite hungry by mid-morning, especially after they return from physical education.
Over half of my students come from low-income households and some are victims of homelessness.
My students are eager to learn and want to please me, but this is hard when they are focused on their hungry tummy. In order for students' brains to run at peak efficiency throughout the entire day, they need to use all their mental energy towards their critical thinking, processing, and computational skills.
With empty bellies and dwindling energy reserves, it is hard for my students to absorb challenging academic content. Providing my students with small, healthy snacks throughout the day will help eliminate groggy, unfocused minds and give them a sense of security that will allow them to be successful as they learn and grow in 3rd grade.
