My students need food. The items that were chosen as part of this project will give our pantry the boost it needs to keep going strong for a couple more months.

My Students
As a Title I school, my school serves a diverse population of underprivileged students. Approximately 67% of our 700 students (470) receive free or reduced lunch. We have seven families (which impacts approx. 18 students at our school) who are classified as homeless – and that number does not include the 40-50 students who live with grandparents or other extended family members who struggle to care for them. Because many of our students come from homes with limited resources, we diligently work to meet the needs of the “whole child;” academics, social, food, clothing etc.
My Project
At our elementary school, we are dedicated to teaching our students and helping them reach their highest potential, but students cannot learn if they are cold, tired, and hungry. Our teachers regularly provide our students with clothes and food without asking for any reimbursement. We want our students to succeed and we will do anything to help them achieve their goals; even if it means giving them food out of our own family's grocery budget. Last year, 22 students from food insecure homes received weekly backpacks with food to help them get through the weekends when they did not have school cafeteria meals available to them.
We could easily have provided food backpacks for another 12-15 students but we did not have the resources to consistently provide food items.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
