My Project
My students are bright, curious, and eager to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. In our classroom, we value literature as a tool not just for learning, but for building empathy, perspective, and identity. As a high school English teacher, I want every student to feel that reading can be both a mirror and a window. Right now, our classroom library is growing, but we need more diverse authors, genres, and voices to represent the richness of our students' experiences and interests.
This project will bring in a wide range of books from authors like Angie Thomas, stories such as “Black Enough” and “Born a Crime”, as well as diverse voices across fantasy, science fiction, and romance genres—areas where representation is still catching up.
These books will help students engage more deeply with reading by seeing characters like them. For others, these stories will provide new perspectives and challenge assumptions in powerful, age-appropriate ways. My goal is for every student, regardless of background or reading level, to find at least one book that captures their attention and opens their mind!
