Many of my students are reluctant readers, possibly because they just haven't found the "right" book yet. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, could be that one text that hooks my students! I am requesting a class set (30 copies) of The Giver so that my students can complete hands-on reading and analysis activities with the text. I am at a new middle school this year which does not yet have class sets available for the eighth graders. In my sixteen years of teaching, I have had a lot of success using this text in my classroom. Students tend to really love the dystopian genre, and this text lends itself to many standards and activities. My goal is to provide my students with the opportunity to hold this book in their hands and experience it, rather than just access an online PDF version. The 65 students who would benefit from this project come from various socio-economical backgrounds and are of various ethnicities with mixed interests. Several students have IEP, 504s, and/or are served in the ML classroom (new to speaking English). I know they would be so appreciative to have access to a brand new set of high-interest novels! Thank you so much for any and all support of this project!!
