I teach first grade at PS 326 in Brooklyn, New York. We are an early childhood school consisting of 1 pre-kindergarten, 6 kindergarten, and 7 first grade classes. My school is considered a Title 1 school, where many of the children are English Language Learners and more than 85% of the children receive free lunch. Since we are a smaller school, we receive a smaller budget. This leaves us with very few resources to purchase the exciting extras to engage our students.
First Grade is a very exciting and important year for children. They are learning the important skills they need to become proficient readers. My school uses a wonderful balanced literacy approach to reading. The children spend a great portion of the day being read to, together, and independently. When the children are not reading they are rotating throughout various literacy centers.
The children in my class absolutely love reading from big books. We use big books every day during our shared reading time. The large text and pictures really keeps my students engaged. These books also increase their print awareness, introduce them to sentence structure, and identify the sequence of the story. The children also love going to the big books during center time and reading them with a friend.
I feel my entire class would benefit from a Big Book collection. The books would keep my students interested and teach them the reading strategies they need to become proficient readers. I am asking you to please donate a Big Book book collection for my first grade classroom. Thank you so much for your genorosity and consideration!
