Dear Donor,
I am a bilingual special education teacher working in a high-need community school in the Bronx. This year, I am working with a third grade class.

The children in my third grade class are beginning to read independently. Some of them are even reading at early-mid second grade levels. I believe if we had some materials that would hold their interests-such as these current events magazines-they could really be pushed to further develop their reading stamina. They may even end up on grade level by the end of the year! (This is always my goal with my special education classes).
These children love to read sources other than the curriculum textbooks. I have used magazines such as Time for Kids and Weekly Reader in the past, and have found them to be highly effective in teaching the children about current events, having them read a nonfiction text that is on their reading level (or close to it), and engaging the children in the world beyond their classroom.
Since my students are English Language Learners, they need much more exposure to the English language and vocabulary than native language learners. These magazines help me expose the children to more of the English language than the curriculum materials alone ever could.
If you were to contribute to this project, your help would mean the world to these children - literally. The inserts in these magazines help me teach the children everything from geography and world history to current events, math and science. Your help will also ensure that these children have a great source of literature other than textbooks or library books. It will help me reach even the most reluctant of readers in my class.
