My Students
My school is located in the southwestern part of Houston and serves kids from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. We are a neighborhood school and a community in the truest sense of the word. We work very closely with our kids and their families to put them on the path to success. We are a diverse place in many ways and I am very fortunate to teach such a wonderful group of kids.
My 8th grade students would enormously benefit from a class set of "Battle Lines: A Graphic History of the Civil War", a deeply affecting work that captures the experiences of regular people throughout the war in a series of short stories.
The Civil War and Reconstruction is the culminating part of the 8th grade curriculum and a resource like this would help my students end the year strong.
My Project
I have always enjoyed teaching the Civil War and "Battle Lines" is a truly remarkable work that I know would be a great resource for my 8th graders.
My students have enjoyed reading graphic novels in class before and "Battle Lines" succeeds in implementing many of the attributes that make graphic novels so accessible and valuable to the classroom experience.
The book contains brief introductions before each chapter in the form of newspaper front pages describing the greater landscape of that particular time of the war so students understand the context of what the characters in that chapter are experiencing. The decision to include this helps reinforce knowledge about the big events of the war and previews what the coming chapter will be about.
I know that "Battle Lines" will resonate with students because it tells stories that are emotionally powerful. The stories do a wonderful job of humanizing the conflict and the art will stick with its readers long after they finish the book.
Finally, this is a resource that will be used near the end of the school year when students desperately need engaging works that can help them finish their year strong. A book this good will be a welcome relief from the stresses of spring.
