My Project
Hello! I teach AP English Literature at Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences in Tulsa, OK.
I am a teacher of English because I believe in the mission of the humanities.
The humanities, as I understand them, seeks to explore human experience and to appreciate and interrogate human accomplishments and failures so we may better understand our contemporary moment. More importantly, the humanities are forward-looking: it looks to where we are going, not just where we have been and where we are. In my English classes, I hope to foster dialogue and the necessary communicative skills through an engagement with literature and writing of all kinds so that my students can ultimately learn from the past and experiences of others to create a better and more equitable future for themselves and others.
At the beginning of the school year, I take into account the concerns and interests of my senior AP English Lit students and tailor many, if not all of the readings around those concerns and interests. Helping with this Donors Choose will assist in allowing us to engage and discuss them. I have a diverse population of varying identities who are at that stage in their life where they are evaluating their place and role in society, in addition to whether or not they truly have control over their lives. Passing by Nella Larsen and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess are books in which students have expressed an interest in reading and engage the very concerns they face every day.
