My Students
Each day, our students enter our classroom Zoom sessions donning bright smiles, excited to be present and to connect with their peers. They are inquisitive learners; they ask thoughtful questions and convey their eagerness to learn by enthusiastically participating and by sharing their thinking with the whole class.
Our fantastic first grade bunch of 100 students love to build and create; they truly thrive when using hands-on approaches to learning concepts, and they become giddy when introduced to unique materials to use in class.
When doing so, they work diligently to explore new concepts despite challenges they face while learning from home.
My Project
Help provide 100 first graders the gift of a hands-on astronomy lesson using a favorite snack: Oreos!
With this project, students will use Oreos to shape out the phases of the moon.
Working virtually in a guided lesson, students will scrape their Oreo fillings according to the phases of the moon. Arranging them on a paper plate, students will use their cookies as a reference to fill in diagrams pertaining to the moon's phases. Later, they will enjoy their treat and celebrate their hard work. Students will later conduct their own observations of the moon's phases over several days. This hands-on experience will surely be memorable and exciting, and it will engage students in learning about our night sky.
