My Students
In our class we use reading and writing not only to free our minds, but to create a more equitable and just society.
Our school is also the only majority black high school in the state.
We have come from nearly being closed, to outpacing the entire district in graduation rate growth over the last five years I(from 60% to 84%). We are also a middle college program, and are ramping our 9th and 10th graders up to take college level classes their junior year.
Our students are creative, passionate, and understand the value of education. They are also justice minded, and are focused on creating a more equitable society in their lifetime.
My Project
Our school is a "majority minority" school, the only majority black school in the state of Oregon. One unit we focus on is Visionary Fiction, where we explore thinkers and artists who imagine and express their own vision of the future.
Science Fiction has traditionally been dominated by white male voices.
Octavia's Brood's premise is that the writers in the anthology are people of color who are 'writing themselves into the future'.
Students of color being able to imagine a future and write about it is empowering to them, their community, and ultimately will impact society as a whole. White students imagining and writing about a future in which the issues and experiences of people of color are included accomplishes those goals as well.
Octavia's Brood is a newer book and not one adopted by districts (yet). We feel we are on the cutting edge of this curricular movement, and this anthology is the foundation. We will use this book for years to come. Your contribution will quite literally change the kind of future our students are working towards.
