This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being in third grade, still unable to pick up a book that interests you and read it on your own. That is what it is like for some of my students with autism. They not only have autism, but also have visual and language processing deficits that make reading on their own a struggle.
My students are in grades 2 - 6 with high functioning autism and learning disabilities.
Mostly boys, they are interested in learning more about science and science fiction. Many are interested in the adventures of characters from TV and movies. They enjoy playing video games and watching TV at home, but hate to read on their own.
My school is in a dense urban area in CA with a very low socioeconomic status. The entire school receives free lunch. More than half of the students in my school are also learning English as a second language.
My Project
My students need TAG Reading materials to support independent reading. These products will make reading independently achievable for my non-readers,as well as fun. I am sure they will be arguing about who will get to use the tag readers. The topics in the books I chose are hand-picked for my boys, who love science and cartoons. My students will learn how to track the words and hopefully build their ability to recognize words and letter patterns as they reread their favorite books.
Your donation will make a big difference in the confidence of a child with disabilities.
With these materials, my students will be able to sit on their own and read books without any assistance, something they perviously struggled to do.
