My Students

Most of us graduate high school with a basic understanding of history, math, science, and literature, but when it comes to personal finance—arguably the topic that we use most in our daily lives—we feel lost or overwhelmed. I seek to change this experience for my wonderful students in Harlem NY.

My amazing students understand that knowledge is power.

All minorities and most living at or below the poverty line. my students seek to better themselves and achieve upward mobility. They are hard workers who are ambitious. They have large aspirations and dreams. This class of students has challenged themselves with taking the AP Microeconomics course and exam this year. They are learning college level economics as sophomores, juniors and seniors. After the AP exam in May, we plan to embark on a financial literacy unit and my kids couldn't be more excited! Growing up in households with very little money, they don't understand even the most basic financial management concepts that many of us take for granted. They are hungry to learn about money - how to invest it so that it will grow, how to avoid scams, how to stay out of debt, how to develop a credit score without taking out a lot of credit. They want to understand financial vocabulary and be intelligent players in the markets.

My Project

The "More Money Please" books are a fabulous resource to help reinforce the many concepts that we will be developing in class (i.e. how credit cards work, what IRAs and CDs are, how insurance works, how student loans work, etc.). I plan to assign readings in the book after we've discussed a particular topic through the day's lesson. The financial aid book will serve as a classroom resource to help students obtain funding for their college education. The board game will be an excellent and fun way to challenge students to show their newly acquired financial literacy skills with some friendly competition. The lotion tissues will help keep us healthy during flu season. The copy paper will allow me to make copies of various student activities that we'll explore during this unit. The healthy snacks will keep my students energized and nourished while we study and prepare for the AP Microeconomics exam immediately preceding this unit and as prizes for winners of the board game.

These students are wonderful kids born into families with low socioeconomic status.

They have to remain this way throughout their lives. A zip code should not dictate a future. They have the intelligence and the drive to become all the things they dream of: doctors, psychologists, accountants, bankers, lawyers, engineers, statisticians and many more. I believe in them. They inspire me every day. Please help me to help them become prepared for their own financial prosperity.
