Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In order to develop the essential reading skills needed for the world that awaits my students when they soon leave high school, my students first have to develop a love for reading.

My students deal with a number of challenges that have interfered with their ability to develop the reading skills they need.

As a self contained special education classroom, each of my students must overcome a learning disability in order to learn. As a classroom within an alternative high school, all of my students face obstacles that have led them to fall behind on high school credits such as being young mothers. Despite these obstacles my students have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to succeed. Perhaps the most important skill my students need to develop before graduating high school is the ability to read at a functional level.

My Project

A library full of engaging books at different reading levels in our classroom will turn reading into the enjoyable and life changing activity that is should be, rather than an unpleasant and frustrating task. If each of my students can fall in love with a book, the process of greatly improving their reading will come naturally. I am requesting a small library of books at various reading levels to match my students' needs. Included are books that are appropriate for High-Schoolers yet at an accessible reading level such as the "Bluford High Series", classics like "A Wrinkle in Time" and "The Phantom Tollbooth", graphic novels, and stories dealing with more adult content like gang violence. This range of reading material will keep my students engaged while allowing them to read at the specific level that best supports their individual reading growth.

Having the necessary books in our classroom will change my students' lives in an immediate and lasting way.

Students will quickly improve their reading skills so that when they soon graduate high school and pursue college or jobs, they have the skills they need to be successful.
