My students need curriculum, such as CD's and posters, that will help instruct them in positive social skills and teach them to avoid bullying with their peers.
"Kindness!" This is the Mantra in my classroom. I know my students want to "do the right thing". However, so many of them seem lost or confused as to what they can do to help themselves or others not be a victim of bullies.
The school my 5th graders attend is considered a Title I School (meaning high poverty).
My students come from many different cultures and speak different languages (English, Russian, Ukrainian, Punjabi, Spanish, to name a few). Children are children wherever you go, and this class is no exception. They are hard working and engaged when they are excited about the subject. I find that they love to perform and Readers' Theaters, plays and real life stories will always grab their attention. They love to talk so we do a lot of group and partner work.
My Project
Our population is diverse, and we work on how to understand different cultures, languages, and ethnicity. This is not always easy. Many of my students enter 5th grade lacking basic social skills. However, with this Anti-Bullying program the chance to role play and engage in a readers' theater will help make the lessons more meaningful to them. In today's society I am very concerned with the increase I am seeing with lack of understanding and tolerance for others. Children need to be taught proactive social skills to counteract what they are bombarded with from the media on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, many of my students lack role models in their personal lives to demonstrate nonviolent ways to handle difficult situations.
I hope with this program to provide alternate ways for them to solve problems and perhaps become role models themselves.
