Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher at P.S./M.S. 194 in the Bronx. I teach approximately twenty-eight eight year olds who are eager to learn about the world around them. However, all of my students come from low-income families (over 98 percent get free lunch) and are minority students, and many come from single-parent homes. These students simply do not have the same opportunities to explore the world as suburban students, because they rarely have the chance to travel outside of their community. When I was their age, I learned a lot of science by watching PBS and dreamed about exploring the ocean like Jacques Cousteau. I wish I could say the same for my students, as some of them have never even seen a beach outside of the Bronx. They are amazed when I show them pictures from my vacations, even if it is only photos of the Jersey shore.
Because most of my students are below level in reading and math, much money is spent in this area, with little money left for science materials. Another donor has been generous enough to fund a science reading library and materials for experiments, but I am still in need of resources to create a fabulous science program for September.
Your donation would fund a collection of books from Evan Moor Publishing which contain many reproducibles, vocabulary and picture cards, diagrams which I could put onto transparencies, student logs and journal pages for writing about science, and ideas for simple experiments. The books cover topics such as plants, the solar system, energy, water, geology, and animals, and there's also a reading-comprehension book which contains stories with multiple choice questions in all of these topics. The books would be used to create a science curriculum for my class as well as the other third-grade classes at my school (a total of over 100 students!). Students can practice the concepts that they learned about after listening to a read-aloud book. Students will be able to compare and contrast different animals, study life cycles, learn about the weather, and gain an appreciation for different animals and habitats.
Thank you for considering my proposal. With your help we can create the next generation of children who dream about becoming scientists.
