Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a public charter school proving that all children are capable of success, regardless of zip code, race, or other factors. 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and 99% of our students are students of color. 100% of our students are on the path to and through college.

My students are voracious readers, and they often cite independent reading check-ins as their favorite part of the week.

They love talking about the book they're reading: what's happening, who the characters remind them of, and how it connects to other aspects of their own lives. This excitement for learning helps propel them to persist in school, and increases their confidence as students and as proud people of color.

In order to develop my students' sense of identity, understanding of multiple perspectives, and ability to see themselves in the books they're reading, I'm working to add diverse books to my classroom library.

My Project

100% of the students in my 6th grade classroom self-identify as people of color, in a literary world where less than 15% of books published feature main characters of color. To honor my students' background, I'm adding books with main characters who share their background and the backgrounds of others who are underrepresented in literature. I've researched titles geared towards a middle-school audience; now all that's left to do is get them in students' hands.

By providing books that feature people of color, you will help students see themselves in the world as vibrant citizens, part of culture, and eventually, change-makers.

The majority of our students completely rely on their classroom library - and a family's financial situation should not determine their access to reading. By having a more diverse selection of texts, students can utilize literature as a tool in our pursuit of a more equitable world.
