Help Create a Calming Social Emotional Learning Area
Help me give my students items to create a structured and calming social environment and learning materials that will help engage them in independent work tasks.
This school year my special education program is changing. I will be moving from a 3rd-5th grade Resource program to a K-5th Resource/SEL program. Many of my incoming littles have social emotional challenges that keep them from integrating into their grade level classrooms. They become easily distracted and dysregulated for various reasons. They require a lot of social support and small group instruction to teach them the skills to be independent and learn coping strategies to self regulate. They need a very structured and calming environment to learn new social skills and take a break when they need to calm their body and then rejoin their grade level classrooms.
My students would benefit greatly from having a designated area to gain the skills they need to be successful in the school environment.
In this area we will hold social group meetings on the round colorful carpet. The light covers and string lights will help create a calming atmosphere to learn and calm down in. The canopy tent will allow for a private calm down space and the hook will allow it to be easily put up to save space. The clothesline will hang a curtain for privacy and limit distractions. The containers and bins will help me organize group materials and rotation activities, making it easy to store away or relocate to a learning space. The white velcro will be used to create visual schedules, work systems and choice boards. The primary learning materials will provide some hands-on and engaging learning opportunities for my new littles. These include velcro 123s and ABCs which will allow my wiggly students to learn through movement. Finally, the ABC locks and the Lite Brites will make a great rotation and independent task box activity to learn ELA and Math skills.
