I have been a NYC Public School Teacher for 19 years, and throughout these wonderful years, I have come to realize that NYC kids and their families are of the most special people in the world. I have seen firsthand how creating a loving and supportive classroom community through the arts, literature and writing can ripple throughout their lives. It's been a great gift and privilege to be a teacher. I cannot think of a more worthwhile way to spend my life.
I have primarily taught grades 3 - 5 and have seen what access to a beautiful classroom library can do to foster a love for reading.
Next year, I will have the privilege of teaching 2nd and 3rd graders, and after the tough year and half they have been through, I want to reignite a love for reading and learning. A library that represents every student in our classroom, and connects us through our shared humanity, would be a great gift to these wonderful young people.
My Project
A classroom library that celebrates all of our classroom learners can change lives. Through books, students can see themselves, see others, and we can have conversations about our shared humanity as we create a classroom community of readers.
Through this project, these 2nd and 3rd graders will have access to books that represent all students in our classroom, be able to have shared Book Clubs, and have the chance to fall in love with reading.
This gift will be at the heart of our classroom. Your generosity can create a lifelong reader. Thank you for taking time to read through our project.
