Help City Teens Review 10,000 Years of Global History!

My students need 55 copies of a Global History and Geography review book, because if they don't pass the related state exam, they cannot receive a high school diploma.

From the dawn of humanity to the present day: that's the amount of history my 10th graders need to master in order to graduate from high school. On June 15, 2010, they take their first shot at the New York State Global History and Geography Regents Exam.

Many of my students have never been far outside their home neighborhoods, and they struggle with vocabulary and writing. They do not even have a textbook to take home, only classroom notes and handouts. Yet they are expected not only to remember 10,000 years of events from all over the world, but also to write two essays about those events in order to pass the state exam.

One of the best ways to prepare for an exam -- similar to the best way to get to Carnegie Hall -- is practice, practice, practice. These review books will allow students to answer past Global Regents exam questions at their own pace, check their answers to see what they need to review, and practice responding to essay prompts. Also, the books are small and lightweight enough for students to carry them in their backpacks and use them both in class and at home.

You can help inner-city teens prepare for a mandatory state exam that they must pass to graduate from high school. Without that diploma, their options in life -- especially college -- will be severely limited.
