My Students
I want my 3rd grade reading class to discover the joy of reading that I found as a child through my favorite book,"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." We need copies of the book to do that. We also work on readers' theater scripts to improve fluency, comprehension, and confidence!
My school is an inner-city, Title I school with a large population living below the poverty line.
My students are really fun kids loaded with personality. They really respond to learning that's fun. That's what I'm trying to do with book club/readers' theater. The kids will be having so much fun, they won't realize how much they've improved in reading/language arts and how much more self-confidence they've developed.
My Project
Three days per week, we will work on readers' theater scripts. Each child will have a part, and we will analyze the script emphasizing vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. We also work on enunciation and expression. When we feel we're ready, we do some costuming and invite other students to our "performances." It's fun for everyone. The other two days, we want to have a book club and read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My students will love the humor and fantasy in this book! We will take it apart and discuss it thoroughly. If we have time, I would like to work on the script for the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" play. Maybe we'll even have a performance!
The books that we have in amounts for book club are very few in number, and the students have read almost all of them already.
This project would give us something new and fun to work on. Our kids need some fantasy and imagination in their lives in order to deal with the more difficult aspects of their lives. This book is perfect for that. My students LOVE readers' theater. They love taking on a different role/personality.
