Help Chicago Students Test Their Drinking Water!

Help me give my students the ability to test their water at home and at school.

My Students

87% of my students are from low-income households and many of them have to use public trains and buses just to get to school. Some even travel over an hour each way. My students are making an active decision to better their education by attending our school.

Our school is an honors for all high school, meaning that each of my students is in honors-level courses.

Not only do we cover honors level material, but we expect our students to participate in labs, activities, and think beyond the standard curriculum.

My Project

Over 90% of my students come from low income households. A majority of them leave school to go work until 11 PM, then do their homework. They are all hardworking, motivated students, but they often have little financial stability. These supplies will help my students, in and out of the classroom while connecting in class learning to their home lives.

Historically, Chicago has had issues with drinking water levels throughout the city.

At our school, some of the water comes out of the faucet brown. These materials will help students do activities during class and learn in multiple ways. During our environmental science unit on water use, we want to do an experiment testing our water in the school, and around the city. Because our students live in areas as far as the Illinois/Indiana boarder, to the northern most parts of Chicago, we have access to a wide range of neighborhoods in Chicago.

Environmental science and biology effect every student. In order for students to increase their learning, they must be able to connect what they're learning in school, to their everyday lives! These materials will allow us to test water through the building and city. We plan on then creating a map of water levels where our students live, and presenting this information to administration and other students.
