This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Books are such an important factor in student success. I want my students to be able to annotate their books and keep them in their home libraries.
I teach at a low income school in Los Angeles.
My awesome students don't have a lot of resources to buy books, but they are just learning to love them. I would like to fuel this fire. I would like them to learn to love reading, which transfers over to academic success across the curriculum.
My Project
Zora Neale Hurston penned a beautiful book, full of imagery and metaphors. Not only will the students be able to keep a copy of this incredible text, which is aligned with the 11th grade curriculum of American Lit, but they can learn to write in it-- highlight it-- take notes in the margins-- and truly show ownership of this awesome book!
Jim Trelease did a huge study on the importance of owning books.
Kids need to have books at home. The newly increased importance of technology is making our love of paper dwindle, but ereaders break, students don't always have the resources to repair them or use them. Books can be read over and over again, and they can be passed on.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
