YUCK! There's someones spit in my instrument!!! All too often band class in our school begins with these very words.
In an isolated, empty basement hallway, there lives a unique community of young musicians.
Our tiny room is hidden far from the rest of the school, yet provides a feeling of safety and belonging for the nearly 250 students who inhabit it every day. We are a large middle school in an urban setting with a richly diverse student body. Most of our children come to the school having never held a band instrument, yet they leave with a lifelong passion to keep music in their lives. Our students participate actively in numerous regional and local festivals and competitions. They yield stellar results. Not because they take private lessons, and most certainly not because we have a multitude of high quality instruments. Our students succeed because they work tirelessly with the limited resources we have.
My Project
With nearly 50 students each band class (sometimes more than 50) there are often not enough instruments for all the children. Students in our school share instruments with their classmates. As a result, there is immense wear and tear on our aging inventory. The spread of germs through sharing instruments is also a major concern. The new instruments from this grant will alleviate the some of sharing of instruments among students. The trumpets, flute and clarinet would be used every day in band class, and would be available for students to take home to practice. The more instruments we have, the more students I can include in our band. Someday, I hope that we can provide an instrument for any student in our school who desires to learn to play one. This project will get us closer to that goal.
Music is a precious lifelong gift, of which no student should ever be denied.
Our band program is growing every year, in spite of a severe lack of funding. This grant would help me to extend music instruction to more students. We have been the recipients of numerous grants. These kind donations are the reason that our band program still exists. Please help my students continue to shine in the community through the power of music!
