My Students

Imagine you're a person with autism. You're unable to read facial expressions, you don't understand sarcasm, and you don't cope well when things don't go your way. You have to learn these skills the same way you learn long division. Social stories are the best way to teach these skills.

Students with autism are not ingrained with the social skills that many people are born with, or taught from a young age.

I am a teacher for students with autism in the self-contained setting. Many of my students are non-verbal learners. They do not know how to express what they are feeling, and they need to be taught different strategies to cope in a difficult situation.

My Project

For individuals with autism, it is very difficult to understand emotions and feelings of others and yourself. It is hard to explain why someone's feelings may be hurt, or why it's not okay to act a certain way in a situation. These are instincts that most people are born with, but when you have autism, this is something that needs to be taught.

Social stories are a very important resource to have in a classroom for students with autism.

Social stories are used to help a person with autism to understand how others might behave or respond in a particular situation, and therefore how they might be expected to behave. Many people with autism are good at visual learning, and like social stories because they're written down and illustrated. Social stories present information in a literal, 'concrete' way, which may improve a person's understanding of a previously difficult or ambiguous situation or activity.
