My Students
The students at my school come from all different types of backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. We are very fortunate here to have a real mix of cultures represented in our school, which ensures that the school is a vibrant, ever-changing community. Our students also live in a community particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our school has not been able to remain open for more than a few days at a time this school year, and most students haven't been back to the building since last March. The students are motivated, talented, and most of all-they love our school garden! During a normal school year, the students help with all aspects of the garden planting seeds, harvesting vegetables, working with our compost, and even feeding our chickens.
My Project
As part of our garden program, students regularly receive 2 periods of cooking instruction every month. When students were in-person, they had access to our instructional cooking tools, including kid-safe equipment like knives. This year, the majority of the students are learning from home 100% of the time, and even those that are in-person don't have the ability to attend classes in our kitchen in-person.
In order to bring our cooking classes home, our staff have regularly put together home-cooking kits with ingredients that students can use to follow along with a live or recorded cooking lesson.
Unfortunately, many of our students don't have their own kid-safe cooking equipment at home, and so we would like to send every remote student a kid-safe knife in the next home cooking kit, so students can safely follow along with our lessons without needing an adult present in order to chop. These are the same knives we use in our classroom, so students are already familiar with the techniques to use them safely.
