Help Build Future Engineers With STEM

My Students

I teach academically gifted students in grades K-5 at a school where over 80% over the students are economically disadvantaged. My students have inquisitive minds and they love hands on projects. Every time we read a text, I pair a STEM challenge with it. My students beg for STEM challenges and projects. For example, when we researched The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, they developed contraptions to clean up trash in the ocean. They will be solving global issues in the future!

This project will give my students access to quality STEM materials, which they need access to in order to fulfill their full potential.

These materials will allow them to learn the engineering design process and foster a growth mindset. Sometimes my students easily give up because they think everything needs to be perfect the first time. Exposing them to STEM concepts shows them that failure leads to growth and you have to keep trying.

My Project

I teach academically and intellectually gifted students at a school that is over 80% economically disadvantaged. I want my students to have access to STEM at an early age. They love thinking critically to solve issues. Research shows that when students are exposed to STEM at an earlier age, they are more likely to pursue STEM careers.

My goal is to integrate STEM into every literature unit that I teach.

I need some more STEM tools in order to do that. For example, with first grade we read about bridges and I want students to be able to build their own bridge designs. The LEGOs and Keva Planks will be used for this project and so many more. There are ways to integrate these tools in all subject areas to make learning more meaningful and challenging.
