it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Here's the challenge facing me. In addition to my regular classes, I teach a class of 25 eight graders who absolutely love to read everything they can get their hands on. Unfortunately, my school does not have the finances to purchase anymore class sets, and we do not want to rely on the photocopier.
My 8th grade literature class is made up of an amazing bunch of students.
I taught many of them 6th grade humanities, and requested to have this group again because they brought a smile to my face every day I've ever been around them. My students come from a very tough and very poor neighborhood. Their families do not have money to purchase their children books on a regular basis, however, my students find their escape through books. Not just any books, but ones that inspire thought, dreams, discussions and hope. Our school finances have robbed them of that wonderful feeling of holding a book in your hands, but it cannot take away their desire to read...no matter how they get it.
My Project
I am requesting 25 copies of Suzanne Collins' incredible young adult novel, Mockingjay, the third and final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy. Believe me when I say, my students are starving to read this book! Its all they have been talking about, and I finally understood their enthusiasm when I read it over the summer. Although it is classified as a young adult novel, its has extremely important and wide-ranging themes and metaphors (including people's desensitization of violence in the modern media and the immediate and long ranging consequences of this). As an educator, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your own students excited to read and learn, in a way that is not reluctant, but inviting.
Without the donors who are continually gracious, many students would not have the learning opportunities they do.
Donors have made it possible to bring a richer learning environment into so many classes, making students have a memorable experience. My students love to learn, unconditionally. They are always interested, always asking questions, always looking for more. With your donation, they will get that and a lot more. My students will have a chance to extend their learning and love of reading outside of the class. Learning, and especially reading, are both very personal and are something that must be experienced and felt. My students are at that point, and now all they need is that opportunity....that chance that could forever make them love the magic of storytelling.
