Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Almost every year, I take my students on a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. The museum is free for New York City school kids and is a classic destination for an elementary-school field grip. But I have never taken a class to the planetarium at the museum because the planetarium has an additional fee. As a museum member, I always go ahead of time whenever I take a class to the museum and plan my field-trip activities. Some years the kids ask me if we can go to IMAX or the planetarium, some years they don't, but I know that the children would be delighted to have this extra experience. This year, with your help, I would like to give my students this experience. My second graders are currently doing an extended unit on space. Part of the unit includes a book called "Exploring Space," which is part of our Breakthrough to Literacy computer program. The children read the book on the computer, answer comprehension questions, and do other literacy activities built around the space theme. In addition there will be a related writing and art activity, and we will do several other supplemental read-alouds about space and space exploration. The irony, of course, is that, in the South Bronx, there are basically no stars to be seen in the sky. When I was a kid, growing up in suburban Boston, the planetarium (at the Museum of Science) looked just like the sky around my house, only with a giant arrow pointing out the planets and constellations. For my students the sky is washed out by city lights, smog, and haze. They get the sun in the daytime, the moon at night, maybe a few stars, and a fairly steady stream of airplanes. I know the students will be dazzled by the night sky in the planetarium. If you remember seeing it as a kid, you can imagine the impression it will make on them. Most importantly, it will reinforce the lessons about space, turning abstract "book learning" into something concrete and memorable. This is a relatively inexpensive way to give my students something that will stay with them for a long time. Thank you for your consideration.
