Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a school social worker assigned to work in an elementary school in the south Bronx with the homeless population. I have 900 students in total, 146 of them do not have permanent housing. This project will be used to help fund play therapy, calming toys, decor, and social-emotional must-haves for this population. NYC only gave me a small amount which is far low for what I will need to help service this most vulnerable of populations. Thanks with love!
My Project
It is my dream that with these tools we can help create the leaders of tomorrow. Through social-emotional learning, these students facing homelessness can be able to express their worries, hopes, and dreams. Their adversity does not define them. It is important that they are encouraged and supported to ensure their future success. These tools like the cooling down center will be used to transform my office into a a brave space students can come to when they need mental breaks. My scholars will not fall because of their circumstances, I won’t allow it. I have faith that they will conquer and can make it! It is my hope that through a therapeutic setting those temporarily housed can still flourish. It’s all about equity! Focusing this fall on who they are and where they can go.
