Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Much has changed since you and I went to school. Imagine what it would have been like if our teachers tapped a screen and instantly projected on to the board an interactive map of the American Civil War with Lincoln's Gettysburg speech playing in the background.

Our public-charter school offers a unique outlet for students to focus on academics.

We have a diverse group of students with many coming from low-income families and underdeveloped homes. They come to our school to seek an opportunity to focus on their academics, and to experience what many public schools cannot offer--smaller classroom sizes, hands-on-teaching approach from highly qualified teachers, and a focus on graduation and college. Many being the first to graduate and go to college in their families. I truly believe that we have the best students. Given their environment and personal hardships, they are kind and respectful to one another and the staff, and they continue to propel and strive to be better each day in school.

My Project

Technology interests students and students respond well to technology. With an iPad, I will be able to access the 40,000 education apps that Apple has to offer. As a History teacher, I could connect an iPad to my LCD projector and incorporate lessons into my instructions from apps such as Virtual History, Interactive Historical Atlas, Civics 101, Voters Ed and so forth. Students have a higher chance of learning if there is interest. If I can provide them instructions through means that are relatable to them, they are more likely to be engaged in the lesson.

We are immersed in technology, and students born during the Internet age cannot imagine a world without it.

In fact, they cannot even imagine a world before it. Every child in America should be provided with the opportunity to learn through the use of technology. Times have changed and schools need to change with it. If we fall behind, we will only find it more challenging to get students to engage and learn.
