I educate a community of diverse learners in Coney Island, NY. We are currently using remote learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I teach two classes and work with many other students through my involvement with the student government.
My 6th grade and 7th grade math classes are ICT classes with 12 students with an IEP.
Many students in both of my classes struggle with mathematical concepts and applying them to solve real world problems. Living in a low income urban environment hinders their ability to experience activities that children their age in other cities have experienced. Fortunately many of them were able to obtain technology from our school to able to to participate in remote lessons, however many of them are struggling because nothing can replace having myself and my co-teachers working with them directly.
My Project
With these materials I would be able to bring my "classroom" into my students' homes. Having access to these materials would allow me to instruct my students similarly to how I would in our classroom. Using Google Meet I could teach them live and record for students to watch at a later time. Having chart paper, as opposed to using a dry erase board, would mean I would have the charts to refer to for students who are struggling, rather than having to recreate it all over again. I would like to make the transition from the traditional classroom setting to remote learning as seamless as possible.
