This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Living in an inner city infested with crime, poverty and gangs is the reality my students face on a daily basis. Their financial resources are extremely limited since my students' parents are in a constant struggle to provide food, shelter and basic necessities.
My kindergarten students attend an urban public elementary school in which all of its fourteen-hundred children receive a federally funded free-lunch program.
Because of students' impoverished conditions, the school also receives Title 1 funds. All of my students are second language learners and have parents with no or very limited English language skills. My students are all from low economic backgrounds. They are hard workers and inquisitive learners. They enjoy participating in class discussions and are always anxious to learn about new subject matter. My students love music and dance. They are captivated by fables and folk tales. They also enjoy listening to animated stories. Because they are five and six years old, they thrive off of illustrated books, visuals, and hands-on materials.
My Project
Because of their impoverished and crime-ridden neighborhood, my students are often enclosed in their homes after school, unable to explore the world around them. Moreover, our few classroom computers are slow, outdated and not compatible with current technology. However, through the use of a Sony Tablet, I could open doors to the places we have studied about. My students could travel to distant regions, explore national landmarks, and even take virtual tours of museums and monuments that would otherwise, be out of their reach. With the Sony tablet, I could stream videos of historical figures and events. Students' interests could be further captured by accessing on-line visuals of topics under scientific investigation. Educational websites currently found in our curriculum could also individualize student learning in reading, math, science and social studies through their interactive programs. Having a Sony Tablet would put my classroom's technology into the 21st Century.
My students are currently at a disadvantage when it comes to technology in the classroom.
However, this can all be changed by incorporating the Sony Tablet. The Sony Tablet could truly open doors of inquiry and investigation. It could access the research needed for expanded student learning. The Sony Tablet could help my classroom overcome its technological limitations and thus, give my students access to 21st Century knowledge and information.
