Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in fifth grade begins with a mindful sit and a quick write in our journals about gratitude. Many of my students experience trauma in their homes so the biggest challenge is addressing all their needs. I want them to have the opportunity to enjoy reading by having a wide range of books.

Many of our students experience trauma at home.

However, my students come to school with an enthusiasm for learning. The teachers at my school are devoted to addressing student needs. We are trained in curriculum to help support our second language learners to succeed. My students are exceptional in their ability to overcome. They have made great progress in their reading, and many of those students who had come to me and sworn off reading are now the ones secretly reading under their desk when they are not supposed to. Many of them are motivated readers but lack a choice in what they read, as many of them do not have books at home and as a class we only visit the library once a week. In fifth grade it is crucial to encourage students love of reading so that they may succeed.

My Project

With the resources of a multitude of books, my classroom will be a more welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment for my avid readers. They will now get the opportunity to know what it means to be enthralled inside a great book and let their imaginations run wild with a book of their choice. For the years to come my future students will enjoy the different books by reading independently, using them during guided reading, and using them through read aloud. They will learn stamina, inferences, listening, reading, and writing skills by allowing them to choose which book to learn from. A typical fifth-grade classroom has 33 students and needs to have these resources in order to be functional for the high number of readers we serve in one room. The number of books at all different levels will help me pull students into small group instruction by giving us resources to do this.
