Help Bring Financial Literacy to Harlem!

My students need a class set of Rich Dad Poor Dad: Teens. We also need hand sanitizer and tissues to keep us healthy and toner to print out work.

My Students

A zip code should not dictate a future. My students have ambitions; they have aspirations and they have drive. Although virtually all my students in our Harlem school live at or below the poverty level, they wish to graduate from college and become financially independent.

These students inspire me every day.

They are resilient and determined. Although not quite ready, they have elected to take the challenge of an Advanced Placement class and study college level work while in high school. Since we have to bridge a gap in their actual prior knowledge and what they should come into the class knowing, we spend a significant amount of time after school and on weekends to make up for lost time. The kids are willing to put in this effort to brighten their future. They know that knowledge is power. They plan to be financially independent as adults. By taking AP Statistics and AP Microeconomics, they have already taken the first step in accomplishing this goal.

My Project

The books - "Rich Dad Poor Day: Teens - What They Don't Teach You in School" - are intended for our unit on financial literacy which will take place in the month after the AP exams are taken. The students are extremely curious about saving, investing and budgeting. Most don't learn these skills at home, and these skills are not taught in the high school curriculum. The hand sanitizer and tissues are to keep us healthy in school during flu season. The printer toner is to allow us to print out student work and classwork exercises based on the concepts in the books. The pencil sharpener is to allow students to sharpen their pencils in the classroom as they sharpen their financial skills.

These are wonderful students who deserve a fair chance in life.

Their current home circumstances shouldn't make their live trajectory a fait accompli. They seek to expand their horizons. They hope to accomplish many things in life and they want to manage their money responsibly. Please help me to help them make the most of themselves. They deserve it and they won't let you down.
