I am the librarian at an urban elementary school in Brooklyn that serves an incredibly diverse group of students, nearly half who come from low-income households. We have students from all over the world, and one of the things they have in common is that they love to read!
A number of my students speak Arabic as their first language and I would love to build the library's collection of Arabic language and interest books.
I want ALL the students at my school to be excited to come to the library to find books that interest them and are also the appropriate reading level. We currently have a very small and outdated collection that is not serving the needs of the student population.
I collaborated with several Arabic speaking students to put together a book list that they feel expresses their interests both academically and personally. I can't wait to create an Arabic section in the library that is representative of our student body!
My Project
My school has students from all over the world - help me provide appropriate and interesting reading materials to them in our school library! We are lucky to have a number of students whose first language is Arabic. We currently have a small and outdated collection of Arabic/English books. I would love to build this collection to be able to provide interesting and fun reading materials to ALL of our student population.
I want every student in our school to be able to come to the library and find books that they are excited to read and that reflect our diverse cultures and languages.
Over the past two years I have received many requests from students to "get more Arabic books." I would love to be able to do this for them and ensure that our school library remains a welcoming place for everyone!
