Hello! I am a 6th grade math and science teacher in Brooklyn, NY. Next year will be my second year teaching. My students are inquisitive, active, and excited to learn.
Over the past year, I've spent several weeks in professional development seminars studying different ways to engage my students in the math and science that we're learning-- the content is so exciting, and there are so many ways to make it come to life! I'm particularly excited about a program called Geometer's Sketchpad, which allows students to build and manipulate 3-D models to demonstrate mathematical concepts. It is a powerful tool, and I would love to be able to use it in my classroom. I have been trained on the software, and would be excited to be the facilitator of student learning using this tool.
Unfortunately, our school's budget has diminished considerably from the previous year, and there is little money even to purchase new books, much less an LCD projector so that this piece of software and others (Virtual Science Labs! PowerPoint Jeopardy!) can be integrated into my existing teaching strategies. The addition of the wireless mouse to the projector would allow students (rather than myself) to be able to manipulate mathematical models and discuss their thinking.
Having access to a projector would allow me to broaden the use of multimedia and technology in our classroom considerably, which would act both as a motivator for my students (who wouldn't rather see math and science live, rather than stagnant in a textbook?) and also as a learning tool.
