My Project
The recent COVID-19 pandemic made a great impact on my students' learning. As we returned back to on-campus learning, we are now faced with addressing students' mental health challenges, higher rates of violence and misbehavior, and concerns about lost instructional time. My students need tremendous support in building up their competencies in Social-Emotional Learning which include: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.
As the school's STEM Teacher I believe Incorporating science and engineering design challenges, especially open-ended ones with no clear solution, will help my students activate their SEL skills as they interact in collaborative groups to solve problems.
With the 4M Clean Water Science-Climate Change Kits, I plan on inspiring my students to become active citizens and look for ways to improve their community and/or beyond. They will research problems beyond themselves and work in teams to design solutions for others in order to make a positive impact.
I plan on using the Longking Assorted Liquid Color Tiles during whole-class SEL / STEM read-alouds. Students will be able to sit on these colorful sensory mats as we share stories that discuss making friends, solving conflicts, and communicating through challenges.
I will use the Kinetic Sand Sensory Sets to help my younger students engineer castles, towers, and more, all while unknowingly learning how to collaborate and grow their social and emotional skills in low-stakes, high-engagement learning experiences.
I will use the alka seltzer tablets as part of my chemical reactions experiment activity where students will work collaboratively in teams to engineer pop rockets and experiment with materials to see how they could make their rocket fly higher and higher through iterative testing. The creative, problem-solving nature of all of these s engineering activities will encourage my students to work together, try new ideas, and learn from mistakes.
