it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A classic love triangle that concludes with a terrible accident. A businessman who learns the importance of family and generosity. A King who learns the horrific truth that his wife is his mother. These are the characters and ideas behind three pieces of classic literature I would love to share with my AP English students.
I currently teach AP English Literature and struggle to get books for my students to read.
You would think getting teenagers in today's age to read would be the biggest obstacle, but for my students it's getting them books. With budget cuts and an added emphasis on helping the struggling learners, students in AP classes are often overlooked and therefore lack the supplies and materials to help them succeed. With 95 percent of the students in my school qualifying for the free-reduced lunch program, the students themselves are unable to get the books they need, let alone basic supplies like notebooks and pens.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting class sets of four classic literature books: The plays Oedipus Rex and Antigone by Sophocles, the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and the short novella Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton. The plays will be read and discussed in class, with students doing in-depth analysis on issues raised in the texts such as gender and social class. When we get to Ethan Frome, students will read the novel on their own and lead the class in discussions on assigned chapters to get them used to college-level expectations. The key issues of gender and social class will continue to be raised and discussed, with students researching critical readings and articles. These four books are also texts commonly cited on the AP English Literature Exam. Students who score a 3 or higher on the exam earn college credit for the course, without paying college prices.
Reading these texts will not only help students prepare for the AP Exam, but will also give them the culture capital needed to become citizens of the world.
By thinking critically about important issues such as gender and social class, students will able to understand and reflect on our own society and times.
