it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students, mostly Hispanic and African-American, are smart, creative, and eager to learn, as long as the learning entertains and engages them. In my 18 years of teaching, I've found that students produce some of their best work when they are allowed to be creative and show what they know. The irony is that they lack the supplies to create this work. This is what I would like to change.
I teach at a Title I school in Manhattan in which most students don't get to take an art class until 12th grade.
My Project
For this project, I am asking for study canvas tote bags for students to use as book bags. So many students do not have book bags or bags large enough to carry all of their binders, books, and class supplies. Since our students don't have lockers (our school doesn't have them, unfortunately), this becomes even more of a problem, as students struggle with carrying everything they need for the school day. I've also asked for some heat transfer vinyl for students to use to personalize their bag using our classroom Cricut, which was amazingly funded on DonorsChoose.org.
No student should go without one of the most basic school needs -- a book bag.
