Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Miss, do you have any colored pens I can use?" "Do you have any extra folders?" Without fail, these are some of the most frequently asked questions in my classroom.
At my high-needs school, most students qualify for the free lunch program, meaning they are unable to obtain the most basic school supplies, such as pens and pencils.
My students are a bright, enthusiastic group of individuals who genuinely enjoy learning. It saddens me that they often go without their much-needed school supplies.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting classroom basics such as highlighters, pens, folders, and Kleenex tissues. When the pandemic hit, I ransacked my classroom grabbing every tool and supply I could find to make at-home learning packages for my students. Now, as we look to soon head back to the classroom, I find myself without any supplies. Pens, pencils, and highlighters will help students annotate their reading assignments to help show their understanding. Students will use the folders to keep their papers and materials organized, so more time can be spent on the material than finding yesterday's homework. Engaging and interactive assignments such as researching poets of color so students can see themselves in literature become impossible without necessary supplies. Having these supplies in my classroom allows me to focus on instruction and planned activities, instead of scrounging up supplies for the students. Students will be able to participate in the day's lesson and complete projects without having to worry about having the resources needed.
Without the basic tools used for studying, students are not able to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers.
My students see themselves as scholars, and there is no reason why they should be without the most basic school supplies. By giving students the most in need of supplies, we can create an equitable and inclusive classroom.
