Do you remember what it was like to enter a new school year for the first time?
The fear of fitting in, making friends, and being accepted? That is what all of my students experience as they enter 8th grade. My goal is to create an environment where all students can feel safe and strive!
MS 137, America's School of Heroes is a Title I school, identified as a School in Need of Improvement (SINI), with approximately 85% of our students eligible for free lunch. In addition, our students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Our school has almost 2,000 students with an average of over 600 students per grade. Hard to believe, right? In a school of that size there aren't enough copies of books to go around. The children need their own copy of this book in order to be successful!
My Project
By reading Burn by Suzanne Phillips, my students will examine the consequences of bullying both through the eyes of the victim and the bully. Through an in depth character analysis, students will understand that many students have been either the victim or aggressor and be able to think about their actions before they act on their impulses. They will learn ways to deal with these difficult feelings and what to do in order to change their own behavior. This book is the perfect way to discuss important issues in today's society facing my students. It is vital to the character education that my students need!
