Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are in a large urban school district, located in the inner city. It is a title 1 school with high poverty. 100% of my students are second language learners. They need maximum exposure to topics that interest them to maximize their learning potential.
My students have autism, but have amazing skills that can be developed for future careers and a successful life.
Many children with autism have an affinity for technology. However, my school does not have the funds to provide students with daily access to technology. We are in the technology age and I want my students to learn the skills they will need when they enter college and the workplace.
My Project
When given access to computers, my students are motivated and self-sufficient learners. Even those who cannot write on their own use the microphone feature to do their own research. We only have a couple of devices in our classroom that students have to take turns using and a computer lab we visit once a week for 45 minutes. Giving us these additional two Chromebooks would give more of my students access so that they do not have to wait as long for a computer to use.
Having daily access would help my students become more independent learners and not have to rely on me to look things up on my laptop for them.
We could have daily access to individually tailored reading lessons and computer science curriculum. They could use the devices to look up images for vocabulary they do not know to improve their language skills.
Most of my students do not have access to technology at home. Thus, school is their only time to access the internet and use it for learning. Having these Chromebooks would provide my students with the technology they need to compete in today's and tomorrow's world.
